Reverberation
(Remembering Fingal's Cave)
Acrylic on canvas board, wood,
metal and guitar strings
84x78x16 cm

Fingal's Cave is a sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa off the west coast of Scotland.  The echoes in the cave inspired Felix Mendelssohn to compose the Hebrides Overture.

The painting and carving of Reverberation are inspired by Lin's memory of Fingal's Cave which she has visited twice.  The front panels were carved with reference to the geological formation of the cave and the painting is an interpretation of the echoes in the cave and the experience of looking out from inside the cave to the brightness beyond.

There are nine guitar strings in front of the painting, and a sound box behind the painting with two sound boards - a fixed wooden sound board and a flexible stainless steel sheet, each having its own bridge.  While the wooden sound board can generate a louder sound, the metal sheet helps to create the reverberating effect.  The guitar strings can be tuned using the tuning pegs which stick out of the lower panel.
