Resonance
Acrylic on canvas, wood,
guitar strings, and metal chimes
110cmx63cmx16cm
In this multi-sensory piece, a painting influenced by Bridget Riley's work is combined with a string musical instrument and chimes in order to create an auditory companion to the visual sensation generated from the interaction of colours.
In front of the painting are 13 guitar strings stretched vertically in parallel to the stripes on the painting. The strings rest on two bridges which are connected to a sound board and a sound box behind the canvas.
The canvas and strings are set in a square wooden frame with a top and a bottom panel. Sticking out at the front of the bottom panel are black tuning pegs used for tuning the pitch of individual strings. Hanging below the bottom panel is a set of chimes consisting of small metal tubes and bells.
The top and bottom panel have beadings which are decorated with narrow grooves. The panels are made of beech wood in natural colour and the grooves are painted in black. On the top panel, there are three grooves on the beadings, which together with the two edges, look like the stave lines used in musical notation. Glued on these lines are eight small shapes which suggest musical notes.
