During a visit to Istanbul, Lin spent some time in several mosques watching people pray, particularly women who were praying in the screened off areas for female worshippers, and wondered what they were praying for - peace (the Arabic word on the plague at the top of the painting), love/loved ones, their country, or just a repeated chanting of "Allah" (which forms the screen in the painting)?
