This painting includes Chinese words written in the style of different ancient scripts. At the top of the painting is an extract from Tao Te Ching, which summarises the Taoist interpretation of the origin of the world:

The Chinese ideograms hovering over the 'rocks' refer to different realms of entities in the universe - e.g. cosmological elements, animals and plants, human relations and emotions etc.
